Western TVET College (Westcol) is one of 50 public TVET Colleges that forms part of the Department of Higher Education and Training in terms of the Continuous Education and Training (CET) Act, 16 of 2006(as
amended).

History of Westcol

  • Western College for Further Education and Training (Westcol) was established in 2002 when the former Carletonville and Randfontein Technical Colleges merged.
  • A new logo was developed to depict a new and vibrant organisation of unity and opportunity
  • Westcol acquired Krugersdorp and Krugersdorp-West campuses in 2004 and ceded Carletonville Campus to the Northwest province when the provincial borders were demarcated for the 2004 elections.
  • Carletonville Campus was reallocated to Westcol in 2008 after the provincial borders reverted to the pre 2004 provincial borders and Merafong Municipality was once again reinstated as part of Gauteng.
  • Westcol acquired the current corporate office building in 2008.
  • A satellite campus in Westonaria was established in 2015

Colours

Each colour also has a special meaning:

  • Green: Indicates growth and hope.
  • Blue: Symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence and truth.
  • Red: Point towards to strength, energy and action
  • Silver: Illuminates our way forward Red: Indicates power and energy
  • Gold: Associated with prosperity, quality and prestige

The Further Education and Training (FET) Act, 98 of 1998 constituted all FET institutions in South Africa and includes public as well as private Colleges that offers programs on the FET and the Higher Education and Training (HET) bands of the National Qualification Framework (NQF). The FET Act was amended by Act 16 of 2006 and is now called the Continuous Education and Training (CET) Act, 16 of 2006(as amended).

Western College (Westcol) is one of 50 public TVET Colleges that forms part of the Department of Higher Education and Training in terms of this act. CET Act.

Western College are listed in the CET Act and is included as a TVET College on the list of Public Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges. Public TVET Colleges are not required or issued with registration number – only private FET colleges are expected to register with the Department of Higher Education.

Technical Colleges changed its names from a Technical Colleges in the 1980’s to FET Colleges and again to TVET Colleges. These changes correlated with the changes in legislation.

Westcol TVET College offers various National Certificates in the Business, Engineering and General fields of study and have registered Examination Centers at Campuses.
